Well I was wet behind the ears A girl of very years I still had a pound or two of baby fat I was fresh out of the university It was my first time in the city And I walked alone though Potzdamer Platz Then I saw him in the crowd he looked wealthy and he looked proud He was standing there in his spats He asked me to a drink I didn’t even think And we held hands in Potsdamer Platz Well the night was young and so were we There were Christmas hanging in the trees We fell in love and that was that In Potsdamer platz Well he was a chemist like myself He said he didn’t care for wealth Money he said he really gives a damn for it What really drove him was lure That science could somehow cure Everything that was wrong on this old planet Well it wasn’t long before we married His baby I quickly carried I moved into his county estate The place was big and had its charm But it all smelled like a barn And the smell has yet to dissipate Well the night was young and so were we There were Christmas hanging in the trees We fell in love and that was that In Potsdamer platz Then everything turned sad When our son he died at birth Our house filled up with gloom There was no laughter and no mirth his love it turned to money And greed filled up his heart And the man who once wanted to save the world Only thought of his next deutchmark So now I’ve had it up to here I need to breathe some air that’s clear When will he realize that love is worth more then cash He never kisses me on the lips And says this world is ours to fix Like the man I met in Potsdamer Platz Like the man I met in Potsdamer Platz

Berries on the Rowan Are so lovely to see Growing up out of the mud In front of you and me Berries on the Rowan Are such a lovely sight Make me forget That you're leaving her tonight Berries on the Rowan Have such a lovely smell Make me forget That today we say farewell

I grew up on a farm right by the Black Forest My father he worked like a dog to support us And I quickly got used to sound of the sound of the death rattle And he slaughtered the pigs and the chickens and cattle Well I heard the animals cry as my father cracked open their heads But I never heard a sound like the sound When that chimpanzee melted I joined the army at the age of fourteen There’s not a cause of death that my eyes haven’t seen I’ve seen boys lose their insides and tear their eyes out As they screamed up to heaven with no tongues in their mouths I’ve heard hundreds of dying boys crying out for the girls they won’t wed But I never heard a sound like the sound When that chimpanzee melted I’ve seen shots to the groin I’ve seen shots to the belly When men live for days Yelling for their mommy’s I’m telling you, friend I’ve heard a million Hail Mary’s Oh and I’ve heard Men beg for mercy as they look up to god Standing in front of a firing squad But those prayers have always just been wasted I’ve heard crying babies who’ve been left out for dead I’ve heard men growing crazy saying that they see red But I’ve never heard a sound like the sound When that chimpanzee melted When it melted When it melted When it melted

Father forgive the hatred Which divides nation from nation Father forgive the hatred Which divides class from class Father forgive the hatred Which divides race from race and Father forgive the hatred Which divides this from that There will come a day For every man and women When they come to realize That it’s time to be going And there is only one sin Saint Peter don’t understand And that’s the hatred man feels for his fellow man Father forgive the hatred Which divides nation from nation Father forgive the hatred Which divides class from class Father forgive the hatred Which divides race from race and Father forgive the hatred Which divides this from that Father forgive the hatred Which divides nation from nation Father forgive the hatred Which divides class from class Father forgive the hatred Which divides race from race and Father forgive the hatred Which divides this from that

Well it’s silent and it’s deadly Of this you can be sure It slides tight down your throat Like a raw oyster It’s coming up behind you You better run from it fast Mmmustard it’s a gas Mmmustard it’s a gas Mmmustard it’s a gas It creeps along the ground It’s like a cat out on the prowl They’ll find your body torn apart And emptied of it’s bowels It’s coming up behind you You better hind behind a mask Mmmustard it’s a gas Mmmustard it’s a gas Mmmustard it’s a gas

Keep a dry eye in the house for me Keep a dry eye in the house for me When I look around the room All I need to see Is a dry eye in the house for me I’ll keep a dry eye in the house for you I’ll keep a dry eye in the house for you When all you see is crying in this darkened room I’ll keep a dry eye in the house for you. There are dreams in every life left incomplete They can cause even the strongest man to weep So keep a dry eye in the house for me

Look at them down there It sure don’t look like too much fun from up here “Not at all, sir” They’re dancing around in a moronic haze Hey is that what they call love these days? “It’s ridiculous, sir” Hey is that what they call love these days? Holding hands and giggling into each other’s ears “Quite immature” Sipping on warm wine and cold beer I must say that I’m amazed At what they call love these days At what they call love these days “ It’s atrocious” Why sir, they’re speaking about subjects without the slightest bit of reason Wearing the completely wrong clothes for the season Not able to tell your right foot from the left one Not able to tell left foot from your right one I said hey Is that what they call love these days? Is that what they call love these days? Is that what they call love Look at them down there Well I’m sure glad that I’m up here And far away from that maze Of what they call love these days Far from what they call love these day

Look a fool 02:45
We are here for you, son We are here for you We are here for you, son We are here for you When your back is broken We are here for you When you look a fool, son We are here for you When you look a fool, son We are here for you When you look a fool, son You know what we'll do When you look a fool, son We are here for you

about

I moved to NYC in 2001 and wrote Mustard, a musical about Fritz Haber, the German inventor of Mustard Gas. I was aiming for a Weill/Brecht production, and we even found a German vocalist who sang just like Lotte Lenya. We got a great cast together and did a staged reading with a full band at a theater on 42nd St. The World Inferno Friendship Society were heavily involved in this show. Franz Nicolay was the musical director. Jack Terricloth played a German Officer. Semra Ercin played a big part. Peter Hess and Maura Corrigan were the horn section...

I lost the recording of our one live performance. All I have are a few home recordings we did before the reading...
